Do not gut it! Put it in a plastic bag and keep it cold in your cooler until you get home. If you cannot bring it to the shop that day, you must freeze it. For long-tailed birds like pheasants and turkeys, the tail can stick out of the bag, but be careful not to bend or damage the tail feathers.

Always handle the fish gently. This avoids scale damage. A fish loses its coloration shortly after being caught! Take some good color photos immediately after the catch so we can duplicate the natural colors and spot patterns of your fish. Do not gut the fish! Do not bash or stick the fish to kill it or cause any damage to the head and gills. Wrap a wet towel or rag around the fish and keep it in a cooler, making sure all the fins are flat against the body. If you cannot bring it to the shop that day, you must freeze it. A wet towel wrapped around the fish and placed into a plastic bag will prevent scale damage in the freezer.

Animals such as coyotes, badgers, and foxes must not be gutted or skinned! They need to be kept cool and immediately brought to the shop to prevent epidermal loss. Because of their thin skin, they spoil quickly. If you cannot bring it to the shop, you must place it in a plastic trash bag and freeze it.
